Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship

Course: Troon Portland
Round Scores: 88, 81 (respectively)
Final Position: 100th

Missed the cut by 10 shots for the top 60 qualifying for the final round. First time I have played in an international event with a total of 118 women from 10 nations. Conditions on day one were very testing with 40mph gusts and was very nervous playing in this prestigious event. Lots of positives to take from the event over both days and was very happy with my ball striking. I just need to tighten up on the mistakes I made and the scores will come down. The majority of the play was from the white tees.

McMilllan Greensomes

Event with Craws Junior

This is my second year of playing in Carnoustie Caledonia Club Matchplay with Carnoustie Craws Junior, Hannah Robinson. We won this event last year and successfully defended our title after winning the final by 2 holes. I love playing in this event with Hannah as it reminds me of when I was a junior and playing in these events with someone better than me. It is also so rewarding to be able to play in events like this with a Junior and see them develop into stronger players. I am so pleased we managed to successfully defend this title.

________

24.07.23 – 25.07.23
North of Scotland Ladies Championship

Round Score: Qualified in position 8

40 out (+5) and 40 back (+4) 9 over. Two stray drives cost me dearly on the front nine with a double bogey at 6 and a triple bogey at 9. I lost my drives on both of these holes so it was a reload.

Round Stats
3’s 1 over
4’s 9 over
5’s 1 under

Matchplay
Lost at the 21st hole. I was 1 up going down the 18th and lost the 18th to a birdie. I did feel quite mentally drained at this event and I think that was due to having played a lot of matchplay games prior to this. It just shows that you need to ensure you take rest before you play.

1.07.23 & 2.07.23
Carnoustie Caledonia Ladies Club Championship

Course: Carnoustie

The final took place the first weekend of July. This event goes straight to Matchplay with no qualification. I managed to win my 12th Club Championship and complete the quadruple again for 2023, I did this in 2022 too winning the Angus County Championship, Ladies Links Championship, Carnoustie Golf Club Championship and the Carnoustie Caledonia Club Championship.

Course: Carnoustie Championship and Carnoustie Buddon Course

Sunday 25th June saw the final of the Carnoustie Golf Club Championship for the Ladies. Two round qualifying then leads to Matchplay. I finished leading qualifier after our two round qualifier on the Buddon and Burnside. The lowest four scratch scores qualify for the scratch matchplay.

________

10.06.23 – 12.06.23
North Divisional Team Championship (representing Angus County)

Course: Muckhart Golf Club

Took part in my 9th jamboree representing Angus at Muckhart.  Our county team is made up of 8 players where we play matches against Aberdeenshire, Northern and Perth and Kinross.  Each day 6 team members play foursomes and 6 play singles against each of the teams mentioned above.  I qualified for the Angus team as the order of merit champion for 2022, two of the team are picked based on position 1 and 2 on the order of merit then the selectors select the other 6 players.  We played a practice round on the Friday and then I played 2 rounds on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday.   I always love playing in this event as you are representing your country and playing as a team all routing for each other and you are playing against the top players from the other counties.

________

3.06.23 – 4.05.23
St Rule Trophy

Course: Old Course, St Andrews

I had entered the St Rule but was balloted out. This is a very difficult competition to gain entry to as it is restricted to 60 players with the cut off around +0.5. I was on the reserve list for the event but did not manage to get a space. Being balloted out at the St Rule allowed me to participate in the Ladies Links Championship, a competition I was defending from 2022. I managed to win this event for the 4th time. It is an event I am not normally able to play in as it normally clashes with our North Divisional Jamboree.

________

26.05.23 – 28.05.23
Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship

Course: Ladybank
Round Score: 82 (+11), 81 (+10)

In round one, I was one under par after 5 holes having had two birdies and a bogey in my opening few holes. I had bogeys at 6 and 7 but managed to get one back with a birdie at 8. However the most disappointing thing for me on the front nine was the 9th where I dropped 2 shots by putting myself in a poor position off the tee and then making a 6. I ended up going out in 38 ( 2 over) where I had 3 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double bogey. My backnine started poorly and I struggled on the inward half with a double bogey at the 10th, 12th and 15th along with a bogey at the 11th. I took the positives from my round and the fact that after 8 holes I had been leading the Scottish Amateur on level par, however, to finish 11 over after round one was frustrating. I then went onto round two which was held the same day, my front nine was 40 (4 over) and 41 (6 over). The damage had been done in round one and on reflection the bogeys and double bogeys were mainly caused by being in the wrong position off the tee.

Stats from play:

Round one stats
3 over par 3’s
8 over par 4’s
Level par 5’s

Round two stats
5 over par 3’s
5 over par 4’s
1 over par 5’s

I finished 22 over – 13 over was the cut off for the top 16 scratch matchplay and 20 over for the next 16 scratch. I finished 39th out of 77 players. Disappointed with not qualifiying but plenty positives to take on board.

________

12.05.23 – 14.05.23
Angus County Ladies Championship

Course: Panmure Golf Club
Round Score: Strokeplay Qualifier Scratch 78

Qualifying took place in mid-May and consists of 18 hole Strokeplay qualifying with the top 8 scores qualifying for the scratch matchplay. I qualified in 2nd position with a 4 over par round of 78 which I went out in 38 (1 over) back in 40 (3 over). My round consisted of 3 birdies, 1 at the 1st, 6th and 13th. However, I had bogeys at the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 15th and 17th. I had started the season strongly with a couple of good scores, however, my two club competitions prior to the county qualifier had been disappointing. I was very pleased to finish in 2nd place and everything came together for the weekend where my game clicked for the matchplay. I had two convincing wins with a 6&5 in the quarter final and 4&3 in the Semi. The final I was 3 up and cruising but I struggled on the back nine with a couple of stray drives giving Jackie the opportunity to get the game back to square by the 15th. It just goes to show how one minute you can be cruising with a comfortable cushion of a few holes then a few stray drives causing loss of holes. However, I managed to get there in the end and retain the Angus County Matchplay Championship that I have won the last three years now.
